03 August, 2008 Santi di oggi: Santa Lidia, Bacteria that eats cancer-causers found-An Australian scientist has discovered a soil bacteria that will destroy some of the worst cancer-causing substances in the polluted modern urban environment. Professor Megh Mallavarapu, of research and development group CRC Care and the University of South Australia, says the bacteria will destroy a group of chemicals known as BTEX which has been linked to cancer, nerve damage and other diseases in humans. "Fuel leaks are one of the most widespread forms of contamination in Australia and elsewhere," Professor Mallavarapu said in a statement. "Former service station sites, fuel farms, garages, workshops, gasometers, oil spills, dry cleaners and factories which used or processed hydrocarbons or explosives are literally everywhere that has been closely settled for the past century or so." These sites are often the source of BTEX, which can pollute water and soil, or sometimes emerge from the ground as vapours. Prof Mallavarapu said it was one of the commonest and most hazardous forms of pollution affecting Australian cities and regional areas. Bacteria which can tolerate BTEX have been identified in other parts of the world but these are the first from Australia to show a preference for dining on the hazardous wastes. "You just add the bacteria to the BTEX-contaminated water - and they go straight to work," Prof Mallavarapu said. He said they currently were looking for pilot projects with industry to expand their research. "The reason is that no two contaminated sites are the same - the soils, the groundwater, the temperature, the mix of contaminants are always different," he said. "We want to see how the bugs perform in as wide a range of conditions as possible." CRC Care is a research and development organisation providing cutting edge technologies and knowledge in assessing, preventing and remediating contamination of soil, water and air. Prof Mullavarapu is currently attending the 5th World Congress of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry in Sydney. THE International Olympic Committee bowed to world media outrage yesterday and forced China to begin unblocking the internet for the Olympic Games.
The backdown followed meetings between IOC president Jacques Rogge and press commission chairman Kevan Gosper, who was deeply embarrassed when the sporting body failed to force China to honour an agreement to provide unfettered internet access during the Olympics.
While banned sites, including Amnesty International, were unblocked for the first time ever in Beijing yesterday, Mr Gosper said other sites about the banned Falun Gong movement would probably remain unavailable.
"We have a team working with BOCOG to unblock sites to make it easier for reporters and to remove any concerns that sites are censored," a relieved Mr Gosper said. "Apart from those sites, for example, which relate to pornography, which is common to every country in the world to block, and sites which could be considered subversive, all other sites should be free to enable all reporters to properly report on the Games as they have in previous Games."
The IOC was maintaining yesterday that no secret deal had been done to allow China to maintain its censorship of the internet and spy on emails.
But its shift in forcing China into last-minute concessions told a different story.
The IOC, which has received billions of dollars of revenue from Olympic television broadcast rights, record sponsorship and advertising revenues for the Beijing Games, drastically underestimated the backlash over China's internet censorship and was unprepared for the controversy that followed.
In a statement yesterday, the IOC said that it had "always encouraged the Beijing 2008 organisers to provide the media with the fullest access possible to report on the Olympic Games, including access to the internet".
A week of controversy led to meetings between IOC executive director Gilbert Felli and the chairman of the IOC's Co-ordination Commission for the 2008 Games, Hein Verbruggen, with senior Chinese organisers to begin freeing up the internet.
"The issues were put on the table and the IOC requested that the Olympic Games hosts address them," Mr Gosper said.
There was also a meeting yesterday in Beijing between Mr Rogge and Mr Gosper in which Australia's senior Olympic member was assured he had never been left out of the loop or hung out to dry by the IOC.
"Rogge said, 'I want to assure you I have always kept you informed and we have not shifted anywhere on this and wouldn't have without your involvement'," Mr Gosper said of the meeting with Mr Rogge.
"I said: 'I'm very pleased to hear that because I had big doubts this week. The situation was very bad.'
"Rogge said: 'I want to give you an unequivocal assurance that I have not in any way deviated from our position that we require an uncensored internet.'
"I said: 'If that is the case, you had better put out a statement pretty quickly.' He said: 'I'm here to tell you that there's no deal.'
"He said he was taken aback as much as anybody in the last few days that sites like the BBC, Deutsche Welle, Amnesty International, and so on were blocked.
"He said: 'I also want to tell you that we have got a working group at this time, which is working with BOCOG to start unblocking these sites.'

TOKYO police have arrested 11 people on suspicion of selling pornography and confiscated more than 130,000 videos, some depicting sex with children.
Police arrested 53-year-old Takahiro Oyama and 10 others for the attempted distribution of nearly 133,000 pornographic DVDs and videos, a police official said.
Mr Oyama told police he made ¥1.56 billion ($A15 million) in five years of selling sex tapes through the internet and via mail order, according to public broadcaster NHK.
Police said they were investigating whether Mr Oyama and his colleagues had any links to gangs.
Japan in 1999 banned the production and sale of sexually arousing material involving children below 18 after coming under international criticism for being a major producer of child pornography.
But it remains legal in Japan to possess child pornography for individual use.
MORE than 2500 firefighters are struggling in hot summer weather and across rugged terrain to prevent a wildfire that has charred more than 10,522ha from advancing toward world-famous Yosemite National Park.
The so-called Telegraph Fire's northwest flank was approaching Coulterville, while its southeast flank threatened Mariposa, towns along rural roads leading to Yosemite in north-central California, fire officials said.
Working in 32C heat and windy conditions, firefighters were hitting hard at the north end of the fire, said Kevin Colburn, a spokesman for Cal Fire, the state's firefighting agency.
The heat is making already parched trees and brush burn more easily and wind gusts threaten to spread the flames.
"Our main objective here today is to protect the structures within the immediate fire-threat area," said Sarah Gibson, a Cal Fire spokeswoman.
"There is still a threat to Mariposa because the fire is active on all sides."
The blaze, 10 per cent contained, is about 13km from the western edge of Yosemite and officials said they aimed to stop it from moving toward the park through steep terrain along the Merced River canyon.
Thick clouds of smoke blanket the skies above the fire but Yosemite remained open to the public as the fire did not pose an imminent danger, National Park Service spokesman Joe Meyer said.
"It's not moving quickly or aggressively toward the park," Mr Meyer said.
Fire crews, backed by helicopters and air tankers, are working to prevent the blaze from burning into Mariposa and Coulterville and to protect homes in and around Midpines, another town west of the park where the blaze destroyed 12 homes and 27 outbuildings.
Sparks from bullets fired by a target shooter started the fire on Friday afternoon, officials said.

MAJOR cities and strategic buildings across India were locked down last night after a weekend of Islamic terrorist violence plunged the country into its worst security crisis in years.
Units of the Rapid Action Force were deployed in the city of Ahmedabad, capital of the western state of Gujarat, where more than 40 people were killed and 150 injured in a series of bomb blasts claimed by a fundamentalist Muslim group known as the Indian Mujahideen.
Authorities announced that personnel from the Central Industrial Protection Force would be deployed to protect the country's $40 billion-a-year IT and outsourcing industry after nine bombs ripped through the southern city of Bangalore that is itshub.
Two people died and scores were injured in the Bangalore attacks, which intelligence services believe are linked to the recruitment of as many as 25,000 supporters by al-Qa'ida.
Reports yesterday suggested that the al-Qa'ida-linked groups accused of involvement in the bombings - notably the Students Islamic Movement of India - are targeting software "techies" working in the IT industry, seeking support. It is claimed they have established a potent network of backers in the key city, which is home to more than 1600 IT companies.
"Low intensity blasts, high intensity impact" was how the Economic Times summed up the Bangalore blasts yesterday.
"The sort of widespread fear and panic that was seen in Bangalore after the blasts is just what they want to see and what the jihadists have been aiming at," security expert Balram Singh said last night.
"It's exactly the sort of very potent message they want to send out - that the hub of our global IT and outsourcing industry is under attack and unsafe.
"Together with the attacks inAhmedabad and the mayhem that was caused there, this represents a huge crisis for the Government. Time and again it is showing itself completely impotent in dealing with terrorism."
Last night, as security bosses led by Home Minister Shivraj Patil met in New Delhi, the Government was under pressure over the way in which it scrapped the Prevention of Terrorism Act when it came to power more than four years ago.

BEIJING Olympic organisers have guaranteed good air quality throughout next month's Games, despite pollution failing official levels in the last two days.
The deputy director of Beijing Municipal Environment Protection Bureau, Du Shaozhong, said since restrictions on cars and heavy industry polluters were introduced on July 20, air quality had reached acceptable standards for four days.
The last two days, however, had measured high levels that carry health alerts for the elderly and outdoor activity.
Mr Du conceded more needed to be done to improve air quality ahead of the Games, beginning on August 8.
"I put it explicitly that there is room for improvement in terms of the air quality," he said.
"The air quality in Beijing has further improvement, that's for sure. During 70 per cent of the year, we have reached the requiring standard; and for 30 per cent else, we are not up to standard. It's the reality."
However he said there was still time for the emission reduction measures to have a significant impact and guaranteed the air quality would be up to scratch for the duration of the Olympics.

FORMER Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic changed his looks, assumed a false identity and worked freely in the Serbian capital until his arrest.
Serbian officials today released a photo showing Mr Karadzic with long white hair and a beard.
He lived under a false name in Belgrade, Serbian war crimes prosecutor Vladimir Vukcevic said.
"His false identity was so convincing," Mr Vukcevic said.
"He moved freely around town, appeared in public places and worked for a private ambulance company. People didn't recognise him."
Serbia's top official for cooperation with the UN war crimes tribunal for former Yugoslavia, said Serb authorities arrested Mr Karadzic late yesterday while he was travelling in Belgrade.
"Karadzic used false documents with the name Dragan Dabic," Rasim Ljajic, the minister in charge of cooperation with the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), said.
"We are still reconstructing Karadzic's movement and will use that to arrest the remaining fugitives."
Mr Ljajic and Mr Vukcevic showed journalists a photo of Mr Karadzic with glasses, and with long, white hair and a beard.
Charged with organising the deadly siege of Sarajevo and the 1995 massacre of up to 8000 Muslims in Srebrenica, Mr Karadzic had topped the tribunal's most-wanted list for more than a decade.
Prosecutors say a judge has ordered Mr Karadzic's transfer to UN war crimes court in The Hague.

POPE Benedict XVI has told victims of "evil" sexual abuse by members of the clergy in Australia that he is "deeply sorry" and that he shares their pain.
"I would like to pause to acknowledge the shame which we have all felt as a result of the sexual abuse of minors by some clergy and religious in this country," Pope Benedict said during a mass at St Mary's Cathedral in Sydney.
"Indeed I am deeply sorry for the pain and suffering the victims have endured and I assure them that, as their pastor, I too share in their suffering.
"These misdeeds, which constitute so grave a betrayal of trust, deserve unequivocal condemnation. They have caused great pain, they have damaged the church's witness."
On his way to Australia, the Pope seemed to commit to making an apology to victims. However his spokesmen since then had appeared to play down expectations.
On Wednesday, World Youth Day co-ordinator Bishop Anthony Fisher blamed the continuing interest in the issue on some people "dwelling crankily on old wounds".
Anthony Foster, whose two daughters were raped by a priest and whose attempts to be granted an audience with the Pope in Sydney were seen as prompting Bishop Fisher's remarks, said mere words were not enough.
"Our first reaction is disappointment,'' Mr Foster said. "They are only words - the same thing we've been hearing for 13 years.
"It is simply an apology, there is nothing practical there which is what we were looking for."
Meanwhile thousands of World Youth Day pilgrims have been walking through the streets of Sydney to Randwick racecourse, where a vigil will be held with the Pope tonight before an open-air mass tomorrow.
Karolina, a World Youth Day pilgrim from Adelaide, told NEWS.com.au the Pope had apologised in Sydney to ensure the whole planet got the message. "It's very fantastic that he did it today - it's a world event. He's announced it to the world," she said.
"I think if the apology is said at the vigil tonight, the cheers will be much louder," she said.
Evil
In his homily, the Pope called on his audience of 3400 people, including Sydney Archbishop Cardinal George Pell, bishops, seminarians and religious and school groups, to work together in combating the "evil" of sexual abuse.
"Victims should receive compassion and care, and those responsible for these evils must be brought to justice," he said.
"It is an urgent priority to promote a safer and more wholesome environment, especially for young people. In these days marked by the celebration of World Youth Day, we are reminded of how precious a treasure has been entrusted to us in our young people, and how great a part of the church's mission in this country has been dedicated to their education and care.
"As the church in Australia continues, in the spirit of the gospel, to address effectively this serious pastoral challenge, I join you in praying that this time of purification will bring about healing, reconciliation and ever-greater fidelity to the moral demands of the gospel."
When journalists on the Pope's flight to Sydney last weekend raised the issue of sex abuse and the church, he reportedly replied: "We have to consider what was insufficient in our behaviour and how we can prevent, heal, reconcile. This is the essential content of what we will say as we apologise."
However through the week his spokesman seemed to step back from making any firm commitment that the Pontiff would say sorry. He suggested the wording might be similar to his message to Catholics in the United States.
During a visit to the US in April, the Pope said he was "deeply ashamed" of sex abuse committed by clergy and and pledged he would do whatever was possible "so this cannot happen again in the future".

TENS of thousands of excited World Youth Day pilgrims greeted Pope Benedict XVI as he disembarked from a cruise boat for his official welcome to Sydney this afternoon.
The pontiff arrived at the Barangaroo site at Darling Harbour at about 3.30pm after a 45-minute ``boat-a-cade'' cruise around Sydney Harbour.
An estimated crowd of about 150,000 pilgrims from more than 170 nations gave the 81-year-old Pope a rock star greeting, befitting the World Youth Day nickname of the ``Catholic Woodstock''.
He shook a few lucky pilgrims' hands as he disembarked from the 63m, three-tier cruise boat, before climbing into the popemobile.
Pilgrims, priests and nuns waved flags, shouted and took photos as the pontiff was carried through the crowd.
Flanked by about 10 black-suited security guards, the Pope waved and smiled as his vehicle passed pilgrims pressed against barricades. As he walked to the main stage, a choir of young children sang.
The Pope threw his arms out wide and smiled in acknowledgement of the cheering, clapping crowd as he sat in a wooden chair, especially made in Australia for the occasion.
In a traditional blessing, he told pilgrims: ``In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, peace be with you.''
He was to address the crowd for his official welcome before another procession in the popemobile back to his accommodation at St Mary’s House, behind the Catholic cathedral in Sydney’s CBD.
Pilgrims descended in droves to harbour vantage points to see the boat-a-cade.
Up to half a million people were expected to flock to the city's streets and harbour foreshore to catch a glimpse of the pontiff, who officially joined the World Youth Day program today.
Earlier the pontiff praised the Rudd Government's apology to indigenous Australians during his first official engagement of his visit.
He was greeted by a crowd of about 200 onlookers at Sydney's Government House this morning, where he was also welcomed by Kevin Rudd, NSW Premier Morris Iemma, NSW Governor Marie Bashir and Governor General Michael Jeffrey.
In his welcome address, Mr Rudd said: "You are the voice of hope at a time ... when hope is most needed.”
Later that morning at the Mary MacKillop Chapel in North Sydney, the Pope prayed before the tomb of the Blessed Mary MacKillop, who was beatified in 1995 after Pope John Paul II accepted a claim that she had performed a miracle by curing a woman of cancer.
The congregational leader of the Sisters of Saint Joseph, Sister Anne Derwin, said the Pope referred to Mary's eventual canonisation.
“He said: 'She will be canonised, we're waiting for the miracle',” Sister Anne explained.
After the MacKillop visit, the Pope's 17-car motorcade then made the short trip to Admiralty House at Kirribilli, where he spent an hour with the Governor-General and the Prime Minister. He then took a break before the harbour cruise at 3pm.

17 July, 2008 Santi di ieri San Bonivintura, di oggi:A Madonna du Carminu.
FOR five days it will stand as the biggest religious festival Australia has seen: 4000 priests, 418 bishops, 26 cardinals and more than 150,000 pilgrims celebrating mass together on the Sydney harbour foreshore.
Catholics from around the world yesterday transformed a long-dormant section of Sydney's docks into a sea of waving national flags, cheering, singing and crying young pilgrims.
They gathered to hear the leader of the Catholic Church in Australia, Cardinal George Pell, celebrate mass as the sun set on a magnificent winter's day.
Although record-breaking, their number will be dwarfed by the expected 500,000-strong congregation who will attend the papal mass on Sunday at Randwick racecourse, in Sydney's east.
Kevin Rudd welcomed the pilgrims in several languages, and with a broad Australian "G'day".
"Too often in the history of the world, when young people travel in great number to other parts of the world, they do so in the cause of war, but you here today are here as pilgrims of peace," the Prime Minister said.
The Barangaroo site was full an hour before Cardinal Pell and a crowd of bishops took to the stage at 4.30pm and police were forced to turn thousands away.
Following the greetings, and the welcoming ceremony by indigenous singers and dancers, a hush came over the crowd.
Cardinal Pell welcomed the pilgrims to Sydney, speaking in French, German, Spanish, Italian and English before his homily. He said young Catholics should struggle against their "fat, relentless egos" and commit themselves to their fate. "Following Christ is not cost-free, not always easy, because it requires struggling against what St Paul called 'the flesh' - old, fat relentless egos,old-fashioned selfishness," he said.
"It is always a battle, even for old people like me."The mass combined the old and the new - a new musical setting, the Our Father said in Latin, a choir of 300 and an orchestra of 80 young people.
Rachel Karuana, 20, from Kenya, described the mass as one of the most emotional experiences of her life. She said the pilgrimage to Australia took her four days, four plane trips and many more bus rides. But being here among other young Catholics had made the journey worthwhile.
"This is so big, I don't have words," she said. "Faith is something you need to make work and this is what I'm doing being here."
Standing nearby, with white ochre drying on his skin, Derek Lynch, 21, waited nervously to go on stage. The indigenous dancer from the Kurruru Youth Performing Arts Group in Adelaide said it was a once-in-a-lifetime event.
"It's huge - something the entire world's going to be focusing on," Lynch said.
Eight pilgrims addressed the crowd, speaking of their experiences at previous World Youth Days, telling the crowd of their life-changing moments and encouraging their fellow pilgrims to be proud of their faith and to speak up for what they believe in.
Katrina Alvir, a teacher from Sydney, told pilgrims that it wasn't always easy to be open about her Catholic faith.
She said being a Catholic in Australia sometimes meant "keeping your mouth shut and keeping your love of God inside yourself".

The 81-year-old Pontiff's plane touched down at Richmond RAAF base, on Sydney's north-western outskirts, at 3pm (AEST) today.
The Alitalia plane, bearing the Australian flag and the Papal flag, taxied to the point where the Pontiff was to be met by the official welcoming party, including Sydney Archbishop, Cardinal George Pell, and Prime Minister Kevin Rudd.
Wearing his customary white robes and red shoes, Pope Benedict alighted from the plane at 3.17pm to the sound of applause.
He was welcomed with a handshake from Mr Rudd before moving along the line of dignitaries, including NSW Premier Morris Iemma.
Dr Pell kissed the Pope's hand and introduced him to other church leaders, some of whom genuflected and also kissed his hand.
He spent about five minutes in what was described by commentators as a “meet and greet” session with members of the clergy before joining a motorcade of white vehicles.
Hundreds of people lined the high barbed wire fence encircling the RAAF base to get a glimpse of the Pope.
There were children up trees, families with picnic rugs and thermos’s of coffee and many people waving Vatican flags.

AIR New Zealand has frozen salaries of senior executives, halted bonus payments and is considering slashing jobs to compensate for soaring fuel costs and sliding passenger demand, according to an internal memo leaked to the media.
Pay increases for managers will be achieved only through staff reductions or increased productivity, chief executive Rob Fyfe said in the document seen by The Associated Press.

COMPUTER industry heavyweights are hustling to fix a flaw in the internet that would let hackers control traffic on the world wide web.
Major software and hardware makers worked in secret for months to create a software "patch" released today to repair the problem, which is in the way computers are routed to web page addresses.
"It's a very fundamental issue with how the entire addressing scheme of the internet works," Securosis analyst Rich Mogul said in a media conference call.
"You'd have the internet, but it wouldn't be the internet you expect. (Hackers) would control everything."
The flaw would be a boon for "phishing" cons that involve leading people to imitation web pages of businesses such as bank or credit card companies to trick them into disclosing account numbers, passwords and other information.
Attackers could use the vulnerability to route internet users wherever they wanted no matter what website address is typed into a web browser.
Security researcher Dan Kaminsky of IOActive stumbled upon the Domain Name System (DNS) vulnerability about six months ago and reached out to industry giants including Microsoft, Sun and Cisco to collaborate on a solution.
DNS is used by every computer that links to the internet and works similar to a telephone system routing calls to proper numbers, in this case the online numerical addresses of websites.

Telstra, Optus and Vodafone are firming up details of how they will launch the 3G iPhone in Melbourne on Friday July 11.
Midnight store openings in the CBD and glamorous launch parties are among the events expected to herald the arrival of what is lining up to be the technology hit of the year.
Vodafone spokesman Greg Spears said the telco is still working on the finer details of the launch.
"It is possible we will open a flagship store, either Collins St or Chadstone, at midnight,'' Mr Spears said.
Optus is expected release its launch details later this week.
All three telcos have received tens of thousands of expressions of interest from Australians hoping to pre-order the phone.
Optus originally asked its customers to pay a deposit of $100, but have since removed the option from their website.
Customers can now only register for updates.
Features of the iPhone include a large touch screen, built-in GPS, MP3 music player and fast broadband internet and e-mail access wherever you are in the world.
Telstra yesterday unveiled their pricing, with plans starting at $30 per month with an upfront cost of $279 for the 8GB model and $399 for the 16GB version.
Consumers with $80 Telstra phone plans receive the 8GB iPhone 3G model at no cost.
The 8GB and 16GB iPhones will also be provided at no cost to Telstra customers on plans starting at $100 per month.
Telstra has confirmed all plans include free Wi-Fi access at Telstra hotspots but do require a 24-month contract.
Optus and Vodafone are yet to release their iPhone prices.

NORTH Korea toppled the cooling tower at its nuclear plant today, a South Korean broadcaster said, a move showing the North's commitment to a nuclear deal a day after submitting a list of its atomic plans.
Global powers still need to verify the claims Pyongyang made in its atomic inventory and experts say the dramatic event will leave unresolved questions about the North's declaration, such as accounting for its nuclear weaponry and proliferation.
South Korean broadcaster MBC, one of the five foreign news organisations on hand to witness the event at the Yongbyon nuclear plant, said the tower was brought down in the afternoon and it would soon transmit video footage of the event.
The event was originally scheduled to be broadcast live by international media but TV stations reported technical problems at the scene.
Steam coming from the tower in spy satellite photographs has been the most visible sign of operations at the facility, designed to produce arms-grade plutonium.
Another local broadcaster cited an unnamed, high-ranking South Korean source as saying that six-country talks on ending North Korea's nuclear arms program could resume as early as next week.

THE death toll from the massive earthquake in southwest China last month is likely to exceed 80,000, state media reported today, citing a vice premier.
The estimate on the toll from the magnitude 8.0 quake that hit southwest China's Sichuan province on May 12 was provided by Vice Premier Hui Liangyu, the Xinhua news agency said.
The latest official death toll from the quake was 69,181, with 18,498 missing, according to the government.
The numbers of missing continued to rise this week as more families of migrant workers reported the disappearance of their loved ones.
According to Hui, the earthquake whose epicentre was in mountainous Wenchuan county left 374,171 injured, Xinhua said.
The government has previously reported that up to five million were left homeless and up to 14 million displaced by the earthquake, the biggest to hit China in more than 30 years.

BERNIE ECCLESTONE has spoken openly for the first time about the possibility of a breakaway by Formula One from its governing body, the FIA, as the sport remains paralysed by the breakdown in his relations with Max Mosley.
Ecclestone has so far distanced himself from direct endorsement of rumours that some Formula One teams would like to set up a new championship outside the auspices of the FIA and Mosley, its president. But in an interview with The Times, Ecclestone speaks about it as a possible way out of the impasse.
In remarks that will be seen as part of the continuing bout of megaphone diplomacy between Ecclestone and his former friend, the Formula One rights holder gives warning that the teams are free to do as they please in the absence of a new "Concorde Agreement" between them and the FIA, the Formula One governing body.
"What the FIA doesn't have, which is the most important thing for them, is an agreement with the teams which they would have with a Concorde Agreement," Ecclestone said.
"The teams can do what they like. At the moment what we are trying to do, to keep sponsors happy, is say we can't break away, but it could well be that that will happen. There is no agreement between the teams and the FIA. There is a commercial agreement that has been signed by the teams and FOM (Ecclestone's company), so the teams can do what they like."

CROTONE.

BRITAIN yesterday lost its 100th soldier in Afghanistan since the 2001 invasion, when three troops were killed in an attack in the south of the country.
The suicide attack, in the north of the restive southern Helmand province, was the first this year against British soldiers.
Although the 100 British dead include 26 who died of non-combat injuries, vehicle accidents or of illness, the symbolic total will serve as a grim reminder of the daily dangers faced by the troops, who have been operating in Afghanistan since 2001, and on a large scale since the spring of 2006. There are now 7800 British military in Afghanistan.
Since 2006, the British have scored significant successes against the Taliban rebels, killing many and driving them out of key areas. But after confrontations in 2006 and 2007, a diminished Taliban force, backed by foreign fighters, switched tactics and adopted the strategy of the insurgents in Iraq, resorting to roadside bombs and suicide attacks.

There is intense speculation Senator Obama might pick Senator Clinton as his running mate for November's presidential election against Republican John McCain.
Senator Clinton, who has expressed an interest in running as vice-president, sought to distance herself earlier today from efforts by supporters to convince Senator Obama to pick her, saying the choice was up to him.
Senator Obama, an Illinois senator, clinched the Democratic nomination on Tuesday.
Senator Clinton, a New York senator and former first lady, did not immediately concede but told supporters in a letter she would formally back Senator Obama at the weekend.
The meeting was initiated by Senator Clinton after a day-long series of talks between their aides, The New York Times reported on its website.
An Obama campaign spokesman later confirmed to reporters that the two had met.
“They did meet tonight,” said communications director Robert Gibbs.
He declined to disclose the location or details of what they discussed.

YAHOO chief executive Jerry Yang says Microsoft is "no longer interested" in buying the pioneering internet firm, but is considering "other partnerships".
Mr Yang also maintained that Yahoo is "not under siege" despite a threatened stockholder revolt led by billionaire corporate raider Carl Icahn.
Mr Yang's comments came during a speech at an "All Things Digital" conference organised by the Wall Street Journal in Southern California.
"Microsoft is no longer interested in buying the company and they are discussing various other partnerships with us," Mr Yang said, echoing comments made the prior evening by Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer.
"We are listening."
Mr Yang implied that sparring that took place between the companies while Microsoft's nearly $US50 billion offer was on the table has given way to talks aimed at finding a way for them to work together.
Microsoft could have taken a "much more hostile" tact and tried to oust the Yahoo board of directors that rebuffed advances by the software giant, according to Mr Yang.
Mr Yang stressed that it was Microsoft, not Yahoo, which walked away from the bargaining table.
Microsoft says it broke off takeover talks in late April after it upped its February 1 bid of $US44.6 billion by $US3 billion and Yahoo's board still wanted more.
Mr Yang defended the board's handling of failed takeover talks with Microsoft and pleaded anew the case that the struggling internet firm is poised to recapture its former glory and a bigger share of online advertising dollars.
